FLORENCE, Ala. - Dr. Patricia Sanders, professor of radio, film and television at the University of North Alabama, was recently named adviser of the year by the National Broadcasting Society during a convention in Los Angeles. UNA student Lauren Morgan was also elected as student governor for NBS national leadership. Sanders traveled with six UNA students to the Los Angeles convention to network and share ideas with others in the field of broadcast media. Sanders said she was nominated for the award by students in the UNA chapter of NBS, and the national NBS board, which consists of faculty members, students and professionals working in the field, made the selection. "It's definitely an honor to be chosen from amongst the many chapter advisers from across the country and from colleges of all sizes," Sanders said. "My award and Lauren being elected to the Board of Governors shows our department's desire to not only go the extra mile with our students/majors but to develop leadership in them as well." During the last two years, the UNA NBS chapter has seen a growth in membership and has played a vital role in mini regional meetings, on the UNA campus, in the Shoals community and across the country. Sanders, who was a member of NBS and its honors society while she was in college, said the group gave her the desire and push she needed to pursue a career in communications. "As far as my receiving this honor, it means I am trying to help our next generation of media specialists get a head start on what's out there and the roles they will play in the areas of radio, television and converged media," she said. "I think this award also reflects the care and concern we, as faculty and staff, have for our students and being involved and engaged with them, not only in the classroom, but with outside activities as well."
