FLORENCE, Ala. -- Madison native Alexis Cote, a French horn player and music major at the University of North Alabama, won first place in the orchestral brass caption at the Alabama Federation of Music Clubs (AFMC) competition held Feb. 23 at the University of Alabama. Cote was chosen based on her performance of three concert selections from the standard professional repertoire, two of which were required to be memorized. State winners for the competition were chosen in the captions of orchestral woodwind, brass, percussion, men's voice, women's voice and piano. As a state winner, Cote received a cash award and was invited to perform at the AFMC banquet in Gadsden this April. Also as a state winner, she was entered automatically into the national competition sponsored by the National Federation of Music Clubs, which is judged based on audio-recording submissions from contestants. Cote is a student of Dr. David McCullough, chair of the UNA Department of Music and Theatre, and was accompanied at the competition by pianist Karen Cantrell.
